The DA in the Western Cape welcomes the re-election of Ruben Richards as Executive Mayor of the Cederberg Municipality yesterday.
Mayor Richards’s re-election follows the vote of confidence in the Cederberg Eerste, FF Plus and DA coalition by the voters of Wards 5 and 6 in Cederberg.
Now that the disastrous ANC/PA coalition has been booted out, the Cederberg Municipality is once again governed by the stabilising multi-party coalition of the Cederberg Eerste, FF Plus and DA.
The ANC and PA have finally succumbed to their own displays of desperation and unlawful attempts to highjack control of the local government:
- In October last year, ANC Speaker Maxwell Heins unlawfully tried to prevent motions to remove the ANC/PA government from serving at a council meeting;
- Five days before the by-election of 15 January 2023, the coalition made desperate attempts to appoint Bruce Kannemeyer as the municipal manager – a former ANC politician that admitted to fraudulent travel claims to Parliament; and
- Their efforts to appoint a Chief Financial Officer who is yet to account for serious charges against him.
We are pleased that order has once again been restored following the damage since July 2022 that has been done by the ANC/PA alliance and we trust that the Cederberg Eerste, FF Plus and DA multi-party coalition will bring stability, quality service delivery and good governance back to the communities of the Cederberg region.
