It is with deep sadness that we note the passing of David Benjamin “Dawie” Botha, a devoted public servant, a pioneering civil engineer, and a proud son of the Overstrand.

He passed away on Monday, 1 September.

Dawie was more than just Ward 7’s councillor; he was a visionary who dedicated his life serving everyone he could, no matter his capacity.

He understood better than most that infrastructure is not only about roads or water systems, but about dignity and progress for ordinary people.

As Executive Director of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) for nearly 20 years, Dawie led with purpose and conviction.

He was instrumental in establishing the Africa Engineers Forum, strengthening cooperation across continents, and elevating South Africa’s voice in the engineering industry. His work in career guidance and professional development inspired generations of engineers.

Beyond the accolades, Dawie remained a humble man. He never forgot his roots, or the communities he served. His leadership style was grounded in inclusivity and mentorship.

In the Overstrand, residents will remember him as a man who believed in honest governance, service delivery and a driver of unity.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dawie’s wife Ria, children, grandchildren and loved ones. May his legacy continue to inspire us all.
