The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DOI) has surpassed its job creation target for the 2023/24 financial year, creating a total of 4,679 job opportunities. In addition, 1,333 individuals were enrolled in various training programmes, including short courses, leadership initiatives, external bursaries, professional development programmes, and contractor development programmes. A total of 67 local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) were engaged to help develop and construct road infrastructure, providing much-needed work opportunities for local communities.
The Department initially aimed to create 4,500 jobs during this period but exceeded expectations by achieving 4,679 job opportunities. Of these, 2,664 were taken up by young people, and 1,666 by women.
The Department’s upskilling efforts included a variety of programmes designed to equip individuals with the skills needed to succeed in the job market. The enrolment numbers for the training programmes were as follows:
- Short Courses: 113 participants
- Leadership Programmes: 428 participants
- External Bursaries: 174 recipients
- Professional Development Programme: 40 participants
- Contractor Development Programme: 578 participants
The Department of Infrastructure has shown that it remains dedicated to both creating job opportunities and ensuring that individuals are empowered through upskilling. By working closely with local SMMEs, the Department not only promotes economic growth but also strengthens the skills base of communities, ensuring long-term economic sustainability.
