The DA in the Western Cape welcomes the 36.7% drop in fatalities in the province during the 2022 festive season. The number of fatalities dropped to 131 from 207 in 2021 and is the highest reduction nationally.

I have submitted parliamentary questions to the Provincial Department of Mobility to enquire further details around the festive season road statistics.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all families who lost loved ones over the festive season due to road accidents.

The Western Cape Government, Department of Mobility and local governments across the province have worked tirelessly this festive season, to ensure that our roads are safe and that they are staffed by traffic officials to safeguard the safety of all road users.

We continue to urge motorists to be careful when they open the roads and obey the rules of the road.

I also commend both law enforcement officers and road users in the province that have played a critical role in ensuring safer and responsible road use.”
