The DA in the Western Cape congratulates all Departments in the Western Cape Government on receiving unqualified audits for the 2021/2022 financial year.

This was revealed during a presentation to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Budget Committee by the Auditor-General South Africa.

This level of financial responsibility is key to living up to the expectations of our citizens and puts the Provincial Government in a position to deliver services efficiently, as can be seen in the different levels of service delivery in the Western Cape and other provinces.

Furthermore, fruitless and wasteful expenditure was less than 0.001% of the total provincial budget for 2021/22, with no unauthorised expenditure in the past three financial years. The Western Cape Government, while still aiming to improve, is clearly focused on making sure it does not waste the people’s money, meaning more of it is available to deliver quality services residents can count on.

MPP Deidré Baartman says: “These audit outcomes do not happen by accident, they are the result of strong and ethical leadership, and the culture of accountability that the DA has instilled in the Western Cape Government.

While fiscal responsibility is immensely important, it is the actual performance of provincial governments that matters most for citizens. I therefore call on the Auditor-General in the Western Cape and Provincial Treasury to put together a plan to implement performance auditing of government institutions. The province has built a solid runway for fiscal responsibility, it is now time to soar.

The DA in the Western Cape firmly believes that the Provincial Government is able to stand up to performance auditing scrutiny, because as the saying goes, ‘the truth does not mind being questioned.’”
