In the previous council meeting in Theewaterskloof, the ANC-led coalition government decided on a land swap of the Pineview Park, which has significant historical meaning for the Grabouw community and accommodates several sport codes.
The ANC-led coalition was adamant that the swap is to the advantage of the community. The DA fervently objected to the proposal and asked for a thorough public participation process. The DA also raised its concern that the R7.8 million MIG-grant for the upgrade of Pineview Park will be lost if the swap goes ahead. Unfortunately, the coalition wiped concerns and alternative suggestions off the table and voted for the swap.
The DA then went back to the community and informed them of the plans. The party also supported the public’s outcry on social media.
Consequently, the very same Deputy Mayor who loudly supported the swap, called for an urgent motion to rescind the recommendation.
This is a clear example of how the DA effectively plays its role as opposition in Theewaterskloof, keeping the local government accountable. We noted the public’s objection to the land swap, called on their support, and effectively prevented the ruling coalition from making decisions that will only benefit a privileged few.
